I am not ignoring you.
I am however 1) on deadline and 2) overwhelmed.
Like who starts a book campaign when so many people to work on it are out of town? Next week will be simpler when people are back.
So first off—thank you , thank you, thank you! You book lovers are amazing and you’re purchasing things off our Amazon wish list as fast as I can list them which is not very fast considering I live in a forest where the Internet parties like it’s 1995.
I will get to everyone and quickly as I can. I like correspondence. Just a few things I gathered from the emails I ‘ve gone through:
- Please read the updates! I think I’ve answered most questions people are asking there.
- I’m listing mostly non-fiction now.
- Building a CD collection — so many kids are musically illiterate and that was my favorite part of school as a kid was listening to LPs on headphones! Got a recommendation? Let me know.
- Building a DVD collection. We’re in the mountains –not everyone has TV set up and you can’t watch TV without cable. We do a good deal of swapping around here so kid appropriate DVDs are welcome. The nearest movie theatre has one screen and plays one movie a week. It’s quaint and fun but limited. I’m from Los Angeles so I take my films seriously. 🙂 Ask my kids. They aren’t allowed to get up until after the credits.
We are looking into Donor Chose. Thank you for the suggestions. You all are amazing and the kids who aren’t at camps or their grandparents are popping their heads into the library room stunned.

Update: My trusty MacBook Air, which I’ve written on for going on six years, just bid me a hasty farewell. That was my computer access. It will be at least a month before I can afford a new one. Have patience with me as I navigate this blog and your comments via my phone. Your questions will get answered–it just might not be as quickly as I hoped.

Hello! I recently culled my personal book colllection to make room for a home office for a side business. I have boxes of mostly sicience fiction and fantasy, but other subjects as well, that I would be happy to media mail you. If I cherry picked through for the age appropriate and maybe some higher level reading as well (I was a college age reader in 5th grade kind of kid, I know they’re out there), is this something you would be interested in?

And most blu rays can play DVDs, but not vice versa.
Margaret, I am so glad you are overwhelmed. I mean it in a good way. It means that you.were.heard. In this world we may speak peace in passing, but ACTING on it is so very powerful. I will be 60 in the fall. I still remember the little blue blue biographies that I devoured as a child. But, more importantly, I remember the kindness if people who taught me reading comprehension.
Now, I read books for a “living”….and they pay me in books! We have a large refugee program here in Syracuse NY. Usually, I cull my library and it goes to our local neighborhood branch. After the initial avalanche is over, you and I should talk as I am going to keep this need up front, and if my “virtual birthday party” really happens I will have them purchase a book or whatever might be needed for you instead of a gift for me.

I remember growing up in a big city with few friends and a weekly visit to the library during summer to pick up as many books as I could carry in my backpack. I was a boring teen, more at home with books than people. And that is still true today. I read way more than I probably should.
I wanted to send some of my favorites to befriend your community and kids. I may have gone overboard, because who can stop at just one book?
I’ve actually been in your town before. My in-laws live near Lassen and we try to visit once a year or so. Next time I’ll load the car with books for the library!
Hi, your story broke my heart – I have always loved to read and remember getting books from the bookmobile when I was really little! Harry the Dirty Dog was my fave 🙂 Anyway, I just sent you a paper carton of lightly used and new books today. A big variety from Twilight to a book of Whitman poems. I just saw the piles of boxes on your website – it makes me very happy to know your town will soon have lots of stuff to read!! Good for you for doing this! It helps your town and it also helps us who send the books because it feels good to help inspire new readers. These things don’t happen unless someone takes charge!! I’m so glad you did 🙂
Thank you! There are often town meetings in the “Library” and I always walk away from them disheartened as my eye wandered to the shelves and I would just shake my head thinking–these empty shelves are a giant metaphor for what’s wrong.
